The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Description:

The Mansfield Center at the University of Montana seeks a contemporary
Afghan specialist to develop curriculum and provide instruction for a
Defense Critical Language/Culture program
(http://www.umt.edu/mansfield/dclcp) starting on or about February 1, 2010.
The primary initial need is for the development and instruction of
intensive short-term "operational culture" courses for members of the US
military, in which information on the relevant cultures and economic and
political systems of various Afghan regions are combined with information
on Afghan military, strategic and decision-making processes to give
trainees a broad understanding of the region. The successful candidate will
help develop similar instruction on-line at various levels of
sophistication for primarily military use. Priority will be given to those
who also have advanced language ability in Pashto and/or Dari language and
can develop basic courses in survival language based on an established
Defense Critical Language/Culture Program model. Finally, the candidate
chosen may perform some university teaching in an area that can contribute
to an on-line graduate degree being developed for the DoD.

A thorough understanding of Afghanistan - preferably attained through
residence or extensive travel in the region - is essential. Proficiency in
Afghan language (Pashto and/or Dari) is preferred, as is teaching
experience or a proven ability to communicate in an educational or U.S.
military training environment.
