We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

Dear all,

I am a postgraduate Geographical Information Science (GIS) student at
Salzburg University and am currently writing my MSc thesis about mapping
lesser spoken languages with a special focus on data quality. The sample
languages I investigate are:

- Chakali [cli]
- Safaliba [saf]
- Ambakich [aew]
- Uyajitaya [duk]
- Sam [snx]

Apart from the Ethnologue/SIL survey reports and information provided by J.
Brindle who is working on a synchronic grammar of Chakali, I have been
unable to track down any current data about these languages. I am
particularly interested in information about
- locations at which the languages are used (villages/settlements)
- approx. number of speakers
- dialects (where applicable)

I would gratefully appreciate your help - if anyone knows about fieldwork
currently being undertaken on these languages, please get in touch. Thank
you very much!

Kind regards,

Ulla
