Meeting Description: 

The Society for Name Studies in Britain and Ireland (or SNSBI) has a diverse membership that includes academics from various disciplines (especially linguistics, history and geography), local historians, independent scholars and other interested parties from various walks of life, bound by a common interest in the history of names in these islands. 

Anyone with an interest in the linguistic cultural heritage of the north of England is most welcome to attend. The programme includes papers on place-names, personal names, the names of pubs and trains, 'unofficial' local names, and surnames and genetics.

The University of Salford will be hosting their autumn day conference on 14 of November and is delighted to be able to welcome a number of speakers who will contribute to the programme of papers on 'Names and the North of England'. 

We are especially pleased to be able to announce that Professor John Insley of Heidelberg University can be with us on this occasion, as he has been working on the English Place-Name Survey volumes for Lancashire for many years and has particular expertise on place-names in this part of the world. 

Also addressing the conference during the morning session, John Walton, from Leeds Metropolitan University, will speak on 'The Politics of Naming: Public Houses and Railway Locomotives' and Alan Crosby, of the University of Lancaster, on the topic of 'Black Brook and Treacle Row: Unofficial Place-names in 19th and 20th Century Lancashire'. 

The afternoon session will continue with a paper by Turi King, of the University of Leicester, on 'Using Surnames to Investigate the Genetic Legacy of the Vikings'; Linda Corrigan from Knutsford in Cheshire on 'Ploughboy or Lord? Some Thoughts on the Recurrence of the Personal Name Roger in the Early Recorded Place-names of South Cumbria'; and Fiona Edmonds, from the University of Cambridge on 'Gaelic Personal Names in Medieval Northern England'. 

There will also be time for a discussion before the conference closes, and lunch will allow for time to visit the bookstalls.
