The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

University or Organization: Bielefeld University
Department: Computer Science, Semantic Computing
Job Location: Bielefeld, Germany
Web Address: http://www.uni-bielefeld.de/International/

Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Cognitive Science; Computational Linguistics; Concept/Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence

Description:

Post Doc/PhD Position in Semantic Computing

The Semantic Computing Group at the University of Bielefeld [1] has as its
main goal the improvement of the way in which people interact with the Web,
knowledge in general, technical devices as well as autonomous agents
(including robots, virtual characters etc.). The Semantic Computing Group
is part of the Cognitive Interaction Technology Center of Excellence
(CITEC) [2].

Applications are invited for a PhD/Post Doc position within the project
'Understanding Alignment from Misalignment' which is carried out in the
context of the Collaborative Research Center 'Alignment in Communication'
(SFB 673) [3]. The position is available for 2 years (with the view of
being extended to 4 years) from 1st July 2010. The project aims to
contribute, together with the clinical linguistics group, to understanding
the cognitive prerequisites for alignment in communication. The successful
candidate will apply computational methods, in particular by developing and
implementing language games, as well as designing and carrying out
experiments that can help us understand how people align both their lexicon
and their conceptual representations when interacting with each other. A
further responsibility will be the transfer of these findings onto a
specific robot platform and to carry out experiments with the goal of
finding out how human-robot communication can be improved.

The successful candidate will have an appropriate degree (Master and/or
PhD) in Computer Science/Cognitive Science or Computational Linguistics as
well as a background in one or more of the following topics (candidates
with expertise in several topics will be preferred):

- Natural Language Processing/Computational Linguistics
- (Cognitive) Computer Science
- Image processing
- Machine Learning/Data Mining
- Computational models of word acquisition or symbol grounding
- Language games
- Concept learning from non-symbolic input
- (Cognitive) Robotics

The salary for both PhD and Post Doc positions is around 3,000 Euro (pre
taxes), according to scale TV-L 13 in the German University System, and can
vary depending on age, marital status, tax class etc. The salary increases
significantly with length of service. An online tool to calculate the
post-tax income can be found at [4] (indicating E-13).

We particularly encourage applications from women. Bielefeld University
also explicitly encourages disabled people to apply.

The deadline for application is May 15th, but applications will be
processed as they are received. Interviews will be scheduled for June.
Applications should be sent to Prof. Philipp Cimiano by email via
cimiano at cit-ec.uni-bielefeld.de, preferably as *one* PDF document including
a CV, motivation letter, indication of publications and previous teaching
activities as well as one copy of a publication or thesis (Master/PhD).

Candidates should mention explicitly that they are applying for the open
position in project B6 'Understanding Alignment from Misalignment' in the
Collaborative Research Center 'Alignment in Communication' [2].
