Meeting Description:

Dimensions of linguistic landscapes in Europe: Materials and
methodological solutions

The purpose of this symposium is to draw together researchers interested
in linguistic landscapes (signs in space) in various parts of Europe. Although
written multilingualism is everyday reality in this vast area, our knowledge
concerning (1) its nature, (2) grammatical and pragmatic aspects and (3)
variation, spread and conventionalization of innovation are still in many
ways limited. This one-day symposium hopes to attract researchers at
various phases of their career to present their work and to discuss the
future prospects of LL research in Europe. We envisage the symposium to
be an informal occasion during which new contacts are created and various
forms of LL data/material and methodological solutions are introduced and
discussed.

Call For Papers

The study of linguistic landscapes (semiotic signs in space) has emerged as
an interesting field in the recent years. As suggested by Shohamy and
Gorter (2009: 4), it has expanded from mere documenting signs to
contextualizing observations and problematizing signs visible and audible in
space. Its recent contributions have presented a number of approaches,
ranging from theoretical and methodological solutions to critical and applied
perspectives on linguistic landscapes.

The purpose of this symposium is to draw together researchers interested
in linguistic landscapes in various parts of Europe. Although written
multilingualism is everyday reality in this vast area, our knowledge
concerning (1) its nature, (2) grammatical and pragmatic aspects and (3)
variation, spread and conventionalization of innovation are still in many
ways limited. This one-day symposium hopes to attract researchers at
various phases of their career to present their work and to discuss the
future prospects of LL research in Europe. We envisage the symposium to
be an informal occasion during which new contacts are created and various
forms of LL data/material and methodological solutions are introduced and
discussed. The program consists of a brief introduction by the organizers
and a number of 30-minute slots (20+10 mins) for individual papers followed
with a general discussion. After the symposium, we plan to publish a
selection of the papers presented. Peter Lang publishing house has kindly
offered an opportunity for publication in their Sprachkönnen und
Sprachbewußtheit in Europa/Language Competence and Language
Awareness in Europe.
