Description:

The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL)
invites applications for a faculty research scientist position, with a
specialization in linguistic pragmatics. Demonstrated research expertise
may include any of the following: discourse structure; conversation
structure; illocutionary intention; information structure; and register.
Key to CASL research issues are research skills in cross-cultural or
comparative pragmatics and acquisition of pragmatic competence in an L2.
The ideal candidate also has a demonstrated interest in exploring how
social identity and social relations are related to language use.  
Specialization in a specific language or family - especially Arabic, Korean,
Chinese, or Persian - is desirable, but not required for the position. The
successful candidate will work within multidisciplinary teams on research
projects that enable government employees - especially foreign language
professionals - to improve their job performance. We welcome applications
from candidates who apply either qualitative or quantitative empirical
methods; and the ideal candidate will be familiar enough with both to shape
research projects appropriately.

Appointments to CASL are as members of the research faculty of the
University of Maryland under renewable three-year contracts, with highly
competitive salary (12-month) and benefits.

Qualifications: Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in Anthropology,
Interlanguage Pragmatics, Linguistics, Sociology, or a related discipline;
a record of empirical research relating to analysis of language use; a
record or strong promise of publication; and excellent written and oral
communication skills. The Center seeks people who can contribute
substantially to the strategic direction of CASL and who will participate
in multiple research projects. The candidate must demonstrate willingness
to engage meaningfully in interdisciplinary projects to solve real-world
problems, and to work collaboratively with a range of institutions and
researchers.  

Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and have, or be willing to obtain,
the appropriate security clearance.

CASL, established in 2003, is the nation's 10th university-affiliated
research center. Its mission is to conduct state-of-the-science research
that results in improved performance on language tasks relevant to the work
of government language professionals. Our research focuses on improving
knowledge of less commonly taught languages; enhancing the acquisition and
maintenance of foreign language capability by government professionals;
advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in government
professions; and improving the quality of human language technology.
