Meeting Description:

This workshop is organized by the GIID (Discourse Interaction Research Group) of CLUNL(Linguistics Centre of Universidade Nova de Lisboa) and by ILTEC (Computational and Theoretical Linguistics Centre). Its objective is a critical discussion of ethical and methodological issues in the collection and treatment of data gathered in informal or institutional settings, from a linguistic, sociological and anthropological standpoint. Thus, the workshop will be of interest not only for researchers in the areas of discourse and conversation analysis, but also for other social scientists and professionals in the fields of social services, law, and computer sciences.

Call for Papers:

'Do You Mind If I Record This?' Ethics and Methodology in Discourse Interaction 
Research July 15th-16th 2011
Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa

The papers should focus on the following themes: (1) Ethics and methodology of field opening; (2)Safeguards for informants' and sources' anonymity; (3) Social responsibility of scientists; (4)Giving research results back to the communities studied; (5) Database development and management.

Abstracts:

Abstracts shall be up to 300 words long, and may be written in Portuguese or English. Abstracts in Portuguese should be accompanied by their English translation, and a note regarding the author's willingness to present the paper in English. The deadline for submissions is January 31st, 2011. Abstracts should be mailed to the following address: giid at fcsh.unl.pt

Notification of acceptance/rejection will be sent out by March 30th, 2011.

Oral presentations:

Papers may be presented in Portuguese or English. Presentations should not exceed 20 minutes,followed by a 10 minute discussion.
