University or Organization: University of Potsdam
Department: Linguistics
Job Location: Potsdam, Germany
Web Address: http://www.ling.uni-potsdam.de/index.php/en

Job Rank: Professor

Specialty Areas: General Linguistics; Phonology

Description:

The linguistics department of the University of Potsdam, Germany, invites
applications for a tenured W2 professorship in phonology.

The rank of the position is roughly equivalent to that of an associate
professor. The legal requirements for holding such a position
('habilitation',or equivalent qualification) are often interpreted as
presupposing a successful publication record of at least two or three years
after the completion of the dissertation for applicants from outside
Germany. Professors are not required by law to be able to speak German at
the beginning of their employment, but our BSc courses are taught in
German, so that applicants should be willing to learn German rather quickly.

The position comes with the 8hr/semester teaching load of tenured
professorships.

Please contact Gisbert Fanselow at the email address below with any questions.

The job description in German can be downloaded at
http://uni-potsdam.de/verwaltung/dezernat3/stellen/index.html.
The English translation follows.

Full professorship (W2) in General Linguistics: Grammar theory with a
specialization in phonology

The candidate will be responsible for research and teaching in the area of
grammar theory with a specialization in phonology, complementing the
existing areas of syntax and semantics. Competence in empirical and
experimental methods relating to phonology is expected.

The research profile of the candidate should fit into the interdisciplinary
nature of the Excellence Center for Cognitive Sciences at Potsdam
(http://www.uni-potsdam.de/humfak/hum-exzellenzbereich.html); the candidate
is also expected to contribute to the close connection between Linguistics
and Psychology. Participation is expected in the Collaborative Research
Project (Sonderforschungsbereich 632), Information Structure: the
linguistic means for structuring utterances, sentences and texts (see:
http://www.sfb632.uni-potsdam.de/main.html), and in other projects related
to cognitive science. In addition, the candidate will be expected to
contribute to teaching in the clinically oriented areas of linguistics.
Experience in obtaining third-party funding and an international presence
is desirable.

The University of Potsdam is an Equal Opportunity employer and is actively
engaged in increasing the proportion of women in research and teaching;
qualified women are therefore encouraged to apply. All other things being
equal, handicapped candidates will be given preference.
