Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is pleased
to announce the availability of a Chancellor's Fellowship for a candidate to be
admitted to the Ph.D. program in Linguistics for the 2010-2011 academic year.
The fellowship will support a graduate student who will specialize in syntactic
theory, especially the morphology-syntax interface, and one of the endangered
native languages of Wisconsin (no prior experience with the latter is required).

Wisconsin is rich in Native American languages and language families, although
all are endangered. Of the languages which are still spoken, three are
Algonquian (Ojibwe, Menominee, Potawatomi), one is Iroquoian (Oneida), and one
is Siouan (Hooc?k). The student who receives the fellowship will choose one of
these to work on. They will be required to fulfill all of the requirements for
the department's graduate program
(http://www.grad.wisc.edu/catalog/letsci/lingui.html), as well as to establish a
good working relationship with the relevant tribe's language preservation
project(s), and will thus be uniquely positioned to move into the emerging area
of the field which combines theoretical approaches with data gathered through
cooperative interaction with indigenous communities.

Funding is guaranteed for three years: two years on fellowship and one
additional year as a Teaching or Project Assistant. The funding package
includes a stipend of $18,756 for the initial year, payment of tuition and fees
during the funding period, and eligibility for health insurance during the
funding period.
