This international and interdisciplinary seminar is designed to bring together experts in the Sciences of Language and L2 teaching professionals. The ultimate goal is to update and reformulate the debates that should be addressed by language pedagogues in light of findings from Linguistics, Psycholinguistics and L2 processing research, with the hope of building a bridge between scientific theories and teaching practices. 

The popularization of L2 teaching brought with it a need to find efficient methods of teaching in formal settings. The debates in this field have hinged mainly around the alleged advantages of communicative activities versus traditional methods based on explicit grammar explanations, translation and pattern-repetition exercises. However, all these approaches (including audiolingual and direct ones) have their roots in linguistic and psychological theories that have been questioned by researchers of the Sciences of Language. Structural descriptions of language, which underlie both traditional and functionalist/communicative approaches, contrast with generative/lexicalist analyses based on features that are not always visible through morphemes. However, these latter analyses have not been incorporated yet in most teaching methods. At the same time, approaches to L2 teaching rely heavily on behaviourist premises about learning that have been replaced with mentalist and cognitivist theories among researchers of Linguistics and language processing. In addition, new challenges have arisen in this era in which audiovisual and interactive materials are exploited for language teaching. UNED/CUID (Spanish National Open University/Center for Online Language Teaching), as a pioneer of online teaching, is in a privileged position to incorporate findings from Linguistics and Psycholinguistics (e.g., structural links between apparently unconnected grammatical constructions, language processing strategies, mental maps of the lexicon, etc.) into the new generation of L2 teaching materials. This seminar will make possible an approximation between researchers in the theoretical and experimental fields of language and those responsible for innovation in language teaching.
