Research Fellow in Discourse Analysis
Language and Linguistic Evidence in the 1641 Depositions

In support of a major multidisciplinary Arts and Humanities Research
Council funded project Language and Linguistic Evidence in the 1641
Depositions, led by Dr. Barbara Fennell, we are seeking a Postdoctoral
Research Fellow in Discourse Analysis. You will work with the Principal
Investigator (PI) and a team of other linguists, computer specialists and
historians to further develop and analyse a digitized corpus of quasi-legal
depositions from the 1641 rebellion in Ireland. Under the direction of the
Principal Investigator (PI), you will be responsible for interpreting what
the evidence yielded by the computational analysis tells us about the
development of legal language in 17th century English in Ireland, about the
influence of third parties on the evidence submitted, and about the
language of atrocity and violence of the time. You will be responsible with
the PI for publishing the results in a major peer-reviewed journal. Other
duties involve attending meetings in Aberdeen and Dublin, helping to
organise the overall project, managing own workload in consultation with
the PI, communicating regularly and clearly with the PI and other members
of the team, preparing and attending workshops and conferences.

Salary will be paid at £29,853 per annum on the Grade 6 scale.
