Call for Papers for the International Journal for the Semiotics of Law

Transparency, Control and Power: Issues in Legal Semiotics

Eds: Vijay K. Bhatia, Anne Wagner, Christoph Haffner, & Lindsay Miller

The overall aim of a State is to protect the social order in which the
individual liberty of the citizen is a major concern. As a consequence the
State should guarantee simultaneously and paradoxically a high level of
individual freedom and an order in which such freedom is made possible and
guaranteed.

We invite contributors to reflect on the growing importance of
Transparency, Control and Power in our international community and how
these main ideas have been examined over the years. Contributors may choose
to explore semiotic, rhetorical, pragmatic, sociolinguistic, psychological,
philosophical and/or visual perspectives on Transparency, Control and Power.

Papers which examine the ways 'actors' in our society (legislators,
politicians, activists, movie producers, singers, painters, graffiti
artists, photographers etc.) have provoked public discourse to confront
Transparency, Control and Power are particularly welcome. 

As promised at the time of the International Roundtable for the Semiotics
of Law in Hong Kong (http://www.english.cityu.edu.hk/irsl/), we confirm the
plan to publish two separate volumes based on the presentations from the
8th International Roundtable for the Semiotics of Law on 'Transparency,
Control and Power: Issues in Legal Semiotics'.

1. A special issue of the International Journal for the semiotics of Law,
&
2. An edited volume consisting of a selection of papers from the Roundtable
and a few others, if necessary, specially solicited from scholars on the
theme of the volume. 

We now solicit papers for inclusion to these two publications. The
deadlines for submissions are as follows:

1.	First draft submissions: 31 March 2010

2.	Editorial decisions: 31 May 2010

3.	Revised paper submissions: 30 September 2010

4.	Publication date: 2011

The length of the paper should not normally exceed 7000 words, including
references, footnotes, and appendices, if any.
