It is clear that linguistics has a great deal to offer the Arts and Humanities:
'it is the responsibility of linguists to better educate the... members of other
professions' (Isac  & Reiss, 2008, p. 309). However, this responsibility
requires that we as linguists  recognize the critical distinctions between their
views of language and our own. We invite proposals, in English or French, for
papers focusing on the contributions of linguistics to the humanities, the arts,
or the performing arts, as well as the potential offered by literary texts for
study within linguistics. 

Il ne fait aucun doute que la linguistique peut apporter une grande contribution
aux arts et aux humanités. Comme l'affirment Isac et Reiss, « il incombe aux
linguistes de sensibiliser (...) les membres des autres professions » (2008 :
309). Pour ce faire, il nous revient toutefois, en tant que linguistes, de bien
saisir les différences entre notre compréhension de la langue et la façon dont
les autres la conçoivent. Nous vous invitons à soumettre, en anglais ou en
français, des propositions portant sur la contribution de la linguistique aux
arts, aux humanités ou aux arts du spectacle, ou encore sur les possibilités
qu'offrent les textes littéraires à la linguistique.

'Vowels Ploughed into Other': Linguistics and the Arts & Humanities

No scholarly endeavour takes place outside language. Nowhere is this more
evident than in literature, philosophy, history, religious studies or the
performing arts: all take some aspect of language use as their object of study.
It is clear that linguistics has a great deal to offer the Arts and Humanities:
'it is the responsibility of linguists to better educate the... members of other
professions' (Isac  & Reiss, 2008, p. 309). However, this responsibility
requires that we as linguists recognize the critical distinctions between their
views of language and our own. Conversely, the creative uses of language as
pursued in the arts and humanities provide linguists with cross-cultural and
diachronic data. Drama, prose and verse demonstrate the constraints and the
possibilities of language, and can thus enrich the data with which linguists work. 

We invite proposals, in English or French, for papers focusing on the
contributions of linguistics to the humanities, the arts, or the performing
arts, as well as the potential offered by literary texts for study within
linguistics. Proposals for papers treating other areas of linguistics are also
welcome, and graduate students are especially encouraged to submit. 

Presentations will be 20 minutes long followed by a 10-minute question period.
Abstracts should be no more than 300 words in length, excluding title and
references, and must be submitted no later than Monday, August 20, 2010. 

Abstracts must be submitted via e-mail to apla34 at upei.ca as a separate
attachment (Word). Abstracts using IPA fonts should be submitted as a PDF. In
the subject field of the e-mail enter: APLA 34 Abstract Submission. In the body
of the e-mail, include only the following information:
1. Title of the paper 
2. Name(s) of the presenter(s) 
3. Department and affiliation 
4. Student or non-student 
5. E-mail address, phone and fax numbers (where possible)
6. Audio-visual needs
7. The session the abstract is for: 
    a) The general APLA conference 
    b) The special theme
Abstracts will be anonymously peer-reviewed. Replies will be sent by mid-September. 

The registration fee for the conference is $75 ($40 for retirees and $20 for
students).  All presenters must be members of the Atlantic Provinces Linguistic
Association (APLA).  The annual membership fee of $25 ($10 for students) may be

La langue fait partie intégrante de toute activité intellectuelle. C'est de
toute évidence le cas dans des domaines tels que la littérature, la philosophie,
l'histoire, les sciences religieuses ou les arts du spectacle, domaines qui tous
pour objet d'étude un aspect de la langue ou un autre. Il ne fait aucun doute
que la linguistique peut apporter une grande contribution aux arts et aux
humanités. Comme l'affirment Isac et Reiss, « il incombe aux linguistes de
sensibiliser (...) les membres des autres professions » (2008 : 309). Pour ce
faire, il nous revient toutefois, en tant que linguistes, de bien saisir les
différences entre notre compréhension de la langue et la façon dont les autres
la conçoivent. À l'opposé, l'utilisation créative qu'on fait de la langue dans
les disciplines des arts et des humanités procure aux linguistes des données à
la fois diachroniques et interculturelles. Le théâtre, la prose et la poésie,
par exemple, illustrent bien les contraintes qu'imposent la langue, tout comme
les possibilités qu'elle offre, ce qui en retour contribue à enrichir les
données à partir desquelles travaillent les linguistes.

Nous vous invitons à soumettre, en anglais ou en français, des propositions
portant sur la contribution de la linguistique aux arts, aux humanités ou aux
arts du spectacle, ou encore sur les possibilités qu'offrent les textes
littéraires à la linguistique.

Des propositions de communication portant sur tous les autres aspects de la
linguistique peuvent aussi être soumises. Les étudiantes et les étudiants  sont
particulièrement encouragés à soumettre des propositions. 

La durée des communications est de 20 minutes suivi d'une période de questions
de 10 minutes. Les résumés ne doivent pas dépasser 300 mots, sans compter le
titre et les références. La date limite pour la soumission des résumés est le
lundi 20 août 2010.

Veuillez faire parvenir votre résumé par courriel à apla34 at upei.ca sous forme de
pièce jointe (en Word). Si votre résumé contient des polices API, veuillez le
faire parvenir en PDF.  

Prière d'indiquer dans la rubrique objet « ALPA 34 Proposition de communication
». Dans le corps du message, nous vous demandons de vous limiter aux
informations suivantes :

1. Le titre de la communication 
2. Le nom d'auteur ou les noms des auteurs   
3. Le département et l'institution ou les départements et les institutions
4. Le statut (étudiant ou non)  
5. L'adresse courriel, numéro de téléphone et numéro de télécopieur de la
personne contacte
6. L'équipement audiovisuel dont vous aurez besoin pour votre présentation
7. La session ciblée : 
    a) la thématique générale 
    b) la thématique du colloque 

L'étude des propositions sera faite de façon anonyme. Une réponse vous sera
communiquée à la mi-septembre. 

Les frais d'inscription pour le colloque sont de 75 $ (40 $ pour les retraités
et 20 $ pour les étudiants). Les auteurs doivent être membres de l'ALPA. On peut
payer les frais de cotisation annuelle de 25 $ (10 $ pour les étudiants) au
