The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Description:

SRI International's Information and Computing Sciences Division develops
and applies technologies to meet client needs in machine intelligence,
speech and natural language, perception and visual sciences,
bioinformatics, formal methods, and computer security. The ICS Division is
organized into three laboratories, all world leaders in their respective
fields: the Artificial Intelligence Center; the Speech Technology and
Research (STAR) Laboratory, and the Computer Science Laboratory.

For additional information, please visit the Information & Computing
Sciences Division website: http://www.sri.com/icsd

The Speech Technology and Research (STAR) Laboratory at SRI International
is engaged in leading-edge research in human language technologies and
offers opportunities for both fundamental research as well as prototyping
and collaborative productization. The STAR Lab works on a variety of
research and development projects, ranging from automatic speech
recognition and speaker recognition to machine translation and natural
language processing. Staffed by about 25 research engineers, computer
scientists, linguists and language specialists, and supported by excellent
software engineers, the STAR Lab is seeking an experienced researcher or
highly qualified postdoctoral fellow with a strong background in machine
translation and natural language processing.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform research on various
machine translation projects, with close interaction with a small group of
highly experienced researchers in the STAR Lab. The candidate will work on
a state-of-the-art MT system, investigate syntactic and semantic features
to improve system accuracy, and publish research findings. The position is
initially for one year, ideally starting from July 2010, with potential
extension based on performance and project situation.

The candidate should hold a recent PhD degree in Computer Science,
Electrical Engineering, or related, and have a strong background in machine
translation and natural language processing, with a good research
publication record in these areas. The candidate must have strong hands-on
development skills and be able to work independently with minimal
supervision. Excellent oral and written communication skills are expected.
Experience in semantic analysis and processing is highly desirable.
