Description:

The School of Education of Hunter College-CUNY invites applications for a
tenure-track Assistant Professor position in TESOL (Teaching English to
Speakers of Other Languages), effective September 1, 2010. Appointment to
this tenure-track faculty position is anticipated at the Assistant
Professor rank. In particular, we seek candidates with a specialization and
experience in K-12 ESL teacher education. The College places a high
priority upon research, teaching excellence and the application of pedagogy
to K-12 classroom practice, with an expectation that candidates will also
be active in the profession and the university.
 
Duties include: 
Teaching graduate TESOL courses in the School of Education for pre- and
in-service TESOL K-12 education professionals; engaging in research;
supervising students in the field; advising students; serving on
committees; and developing and maintaining relationships with schools. A
strong record of published scholarship in TESOL/Applied Linguistics is
required for tenure.
 
The ideal candidate will have:
- An earned doctorate by September 1, 2010 in TESOL, Applied Linguistics,
or a related field, with a specialty in K-12 ESL; candidates in the final
stages of their doctoral program may be appointed as a lecturer until
completion of the doctorate.
- A strong record of scholarship/research or a strong research agenda
focusing on ESL teaching/learning at the K-12 level.
- Significant prior ESL teaching experience at the K-12 level (preferably
in urban public schools).
- Experience mentoring and supervising teachers.
- Knowledge of theories and practice of TESOL/applied linguistics.
- Knowledge of teaching ESL through the content areas.
- University-level teaching experience.
- Experience working in New York or other multi-cultural/urban educational
setting.
- A solid understanding of and a commitment to the application of
technology to enhancing teaching and learning.
