Description:

This position will support LDC's language resource creation activities by
providing programming, research and other technical support in a rapid
prototyping environment, for multiple concurrent projects with evolving
technical requirements. In collaboration with technical managers,
non-technical project staff and external researchers, the position will
devise novel solutions to challenging technical problems and implement
agreed-upon specifications within stringent deadlines. Tasks include
collaborative problem solving; software development including linguistic
annotation GUIs; processing and normalization of multilingual audio, text
and/or video data; design and development of quality control and validation
tools; harvesting data from the web and other sources; end-user support;
preparation of public data distributions; documentation of technical
resources for a variety of audiences; other tasks as assigned.

BS in Computer Science or equivalent, MS preferred; proven record of
success in software development projects; demonstrable fluency in at least
one of Python, Perl, or Ruby (preferred: experience with two or more
languages, also including Java, C/C++/C#); experience with a GUI framework
(Qt preferred); solid UNIX/Linux experience; experience with XML or other
structured data (preferred: experience with RDF). The successful candidate
will demonstrate the ability to juggle multiple tasks, prioritize
responsibilities and manage time effectively in deadline driven
environment; work well independently and as part of a team; make progress
despite incomplete, evolving specifications and demonstrate adaptive,
flexible handling of rapidly changing requirements; demonstrate good
interpersonal, oral and written communication skills including the ability
to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences;
good attention to detail; strong sense of personal accountability.
Preferred: education or research experience in linguistics or human
language technologies, foreign language data, Unicode. Position contingent
upon funding.
