Description:

Housed within a world class University, the Department of Language and
Linguistic Science is one of the leading centres in the UK for teaching
languages and linguistics and research in theoretical and empirical
linguistics. We were ranked 2nd in the UK for linguistic research in the
2008 Research Assessment Exercise and two-thirds of our research was judged
to be world-leading/internationally excellent. 

Recent staff appointments, new postgraduate and undergraduate programmes,
and brand new purpose-built accommodation with new research and teaching
laboratories have kept our department at the forefront of current work in
language and linguistics. This is an exciting time to be joining the
department and we look forward to continuing our dynamic growth in the
coming years. 

The role:

-  Lead, manage and review all aspects of the department's strategic
direction, resource allocation and staff management.
-  Promote cooperative working relationships within the department and
across the University. Reporting directly to the Vice-Chancellor,
contribute to the development and review of the University's Corporate Plan.
-  Provide overall academic leadership of the department; ensuring the
highest possible quality of teaching and research to maintain and improve
the reputation of the department at a national/international level.

The candidate:

-  Experience in a leadership and management role in Higher Education;
-  Excellent track record in undertaking high-quality research, publishing
in leading international journals, attracting and supervising research
students and raising external grant funding;
-  Highly developed inter-personal and communication skills with a proven
ability to engage effectively with a wide range of internal and external
stakeholders.
