================================================================

The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

University or Organization: University of Edinburgh
Department: Linguistics and English Language
Job Location: Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
Web Address: http://ling.ed.ac.uk

Job Rank: Lecturer

Specialty Areas: Phonetics; Phonology

Description:

Permanent, full-time Lecturer in Phonetics, within the Linguistics &
English Language subject area of the School of Philosophy, Psychology and
Language Sciences (PPLS).

Candidate must have a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in phonetics or a very closely
related academic area; experience of teaching in these areas at university
level; relevant quantitative skills; and an ambitious developing scientific
research programme in an area that has potential for attracting external
funding and relates to phonetics and the study of human speech. Our
intention is to hire someone with a research specialisation in some area of
phonetics with clear links to other areas of linguistics. An interest in
phonological theory would be a strong advantage.

The University of Edinburgh has the largest concentration of language
specialists in the UK, and one of the strongest interdisciplinary
communities for the study of language anywhere in the world. Linguistics
and English Language has more than 20 full-time teaching staff and a
significant number of research staff, postdoctoral fellows, and so on.
Within the same school are several psycholinguists, and in the adjacent
building the School of Informatics has a significant number of
computational linguists, speech scientists, and so on. The Centre for
Speech Technology Research is jointly operated by Informatics and PPLS.

This position represents an opportunity for an ambitious teacher and
researcher in the area of phonetics and phonology to have a permanent
position in a dynamic and supportive community where there are already
established phonetic experimentation facilities, equipment, and laboratory
space that are among the finest in Europe. The plan is for this position to
be filled as from January 2011, but negotiation is possible on this point.
Note that the closing date is relatively soon (April 16th). For further
information correspond with the Head of Linguistics and English Language,
Professor Geoffrey K. Pullum (gpullum at ling.ed.ac.uk). See also
