Meeting Description:

Invited Speakers:

- Verner Egerland (Lund)
- Anders Holmberg (Newcastle)
-Jarich Hoekstra (Nordisches Institut der CAU, Kiel)

The workshop focuses on the morphological, syntactic and semantic properties of
impersonal human pronouns such as English 'one', French 'on', Germanic 'man/men'.

The questions addressed include the following:
- While the typical contexts for these pronouns seem to be generic, a subset of
languages, e.g. French and Germanic, allows the use of these pronouns in
episodic contexts. What are the differences between episodic and generic uses of
impersonal human pronouns? Why do some pronouns not admit episodic uses?
- Why do impersonal human pronouns often have defective (French 'on') or
suppletive oblique forms?
- What are binding properties of impersonal human pronouns?
- How do impersonal human pronouns differ from impersonal uses of personal
pronouns (in particular 2nd person), and from the human subject implicit in the
interpretation of impersonal verb forms?
