Professor of Linguistics of Endangered Languages

The University of Adelaide is a member of Australia's elite Group of Eight
research-intensive universities. The Discipline of Linguistics, within the
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, was founded in 1992 and has
since built up an international reputation for its research in a number of
areas, including language endangerment, and for its engagement with
communities speaking endangered languages. The Discipline has a full
undergraduate programme in Linguistics, a graduate programme in Applied
Linguistics (by coursework) and growing number of MA and PhD students (by
dissertation). It has a strong record in obtaining competitive grants and
recently added a mobile language team to support work in Aboriginal
languages throughout the length and breadth of the state of South Australia.

Adelaide is a multicultural city with a population made up of over 100
different ethnic communities. Many of these communities proudly maintain
links with their culture. The city combines creativity and liveliness with
a safe and clean environment. South Australians lead a relaxed but exciting
lifestyle, in a state with a rich history, and a particular love of fine
wine and food. The University of Adelaide is conveniently located for the
first hand study of endangered Indigenous, migrant and refugee languages,
it also provides access to excellent local archival resources such as the
South Australian Museum and the State Library.  

We are seeking an outstanding Linguist, with experience in the Linguistics
of Endangered Languages, to join our Discipline. With a distinguished,
internationally recognised research and publication record, you will have
the drive and demonstrated ability to maintain and enhance the discipline's
research income and represent the work of the Discipline of Linguistics to
external organisations such as alumni, state and federal agencies, the
education sector and the general community. 

You should also have: 
-  A PhD or equivalent in Linguistics or Linguistic Anthropology
-  First hand (fieldwork) experience with endangered languages
-  Research focus on endangered Indigenous, community and refugee languages
-  Experience of dealing with official bodies concerned with language
planning, policy making and the maintenance of endangered languages
-  Familiarity with current approaches to language documentation and
preservation
-  A proven ability to provide leadership and work as a team member  in the
Discipline of Linguistics
-  Experience in supervising higher degree research students and the
ability to attract such students

Applicants with a research focus on endangered languages of Australia and
the surrounding Pacific-Asian region are particularly encouraged to apply. 

Salary: (Level E) $139,130 per annum plus an attractive employer
superannuation contribution of 17% applies.
