Meeting Description:

The conference is organized by the postgraduate students from the Department of Applied Language Studies and Linguistics, The University of Auckland. The conference aims to bring together postgraduate students interested in the study of language and offer an intellectually stimulating and friendly platform for the exchange of ideas. We would especially like to encourage postgraduate students working on language-related topics in other fields to come and share their research with us and help us build a network of postgraduate students who all share an interest in language.

We are delighted to announce that the following guest speakers have agreed to join us on the day: 

Associate Professor Gary Barkhuizen (DALSL, The University of Auckland)
Professor Rod Ellis (DALSL, The University of Auckland)
Professor Yan Huang (DALSL, The University of Auckland)
Professor Miriam Meyerhoff (DALSL, The University of Auckland)

This conference is free of fees, but pre-registration is required for both presenters and attendees. Registration will open in early February 2011. 

Call for Papers:

We are pleased to announce that the 1st Auckland Postgraduate Conference on Linguistics and Applied Linguistics will be held on 19 March 2011 at The University of Auckland.

We invite postgraduate students (both MA and PhD) to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations in any area of linguistics, theoretical or applied. The research may come from the following categories but is not limited to them:

Cognitive linguistics
Corpus/Text linguistics
Critical discourse analysis
Education and Literacy: language and education, bilingual & multilingual education
First and second language acquisition
Historical linguistics
Narrative inquiry and oral history
Pragmatics/Semantics
Phonetics/Phonology
Psycholinguistics
Second language teaching/learning/assessment
Sociolinguistics: language and society, gender, etc. 
Speech therapy & language disorders
Syntax/Morphology
Stylistics
Translation studies
Any other area concerned with language study

Submissions are called for individual papers and posters presenting either completed research or work-in-progress. Individual papers will be allotted 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion. Poster presentations are especially encouraged from researchers who want to present work-in-progress or receive more individual feedback than allowed for by the 10 minute discussion in the paper presentations. There will be a dedicated poster session during the conference. 

Proposals for both papers and posters should include an abstract of no more than 250 words. The abstracts should be submitted via the online submission system at www.lknol.com/conference/abstract.html by Friday 21 January 2011. Selected presenters will be informed by early February 2011.
