Meeting Description:

Within and Across Spaces: Towards Multi-dimensional Models of Gesture Space

Theme session on gesture space at the Third Conference of the Scandinavian Association for Language and Cognition (SALC III) Copenhagen, June 14 - 16, 2011

Conference website:

SALC website:

Gestural forms are usually described with four parameters: hand shape, palm orientation, movement pattern, and location in gesture space (e.g. Webb 1999, Becker 2004, Bressem 2008). Gesture researchers have tended to represent the parameter of space as a flat two-dimensional grid (e.g. McNeill 1992), but recent theoretical and technical advances in gesture analysis suggest going beyond this view. We require a multi-dimensional model of gesture space that reflects the gradient, dynamic, and interactive nature of gestural action (e.g. Cienki & Müller 2008, Duncan et al. 2007, Fricke 2008, Kendon 2004, Ladewig 2010, Mittelberg 2010, Müller 2008, Müller & Tag in prep., Sweetser 2007, Sweetser & Sizemore 2008, Talmy 2000). Combining cognitive, semiotic, interactive, and applied perspectives, the goal of this theme session is at least two-fold: to examine how speakers communicate within and across spaces (e.g. in different cultural, social, and physical contexts), and to work towards fine-grained models of gesture space.

Call for Papers:

We invite contributions that may address the following issues but others are also welcome:

-Gesture space and conceptual space
-Interacting spaces
-Gesture space and communicative dynamism
-Space as a formal parameter of gestural action
-Proxemics, kinesics, chronemics, and gesture space
-Recording, analyzing, and transcribing spatial parameters of gestural action
-Multidimensionality of gesture space
-Gradience in gesture space
-3D analyses using motion capture systems

In accordance with the general SALC III submission guidelines, the deadline for submitting abstracts is December 1, 2010. Presentations will be allotted 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for discussion. The language of the conference is English.

Abstracts should not exceed 300 words (references excluded) and be emailed as a Word attachment directly to SALC3 at hum.ku.dk (subject: SALC III abstract). The attached document should contain the title of the talk and the abstract, but no information identifying the author(s). Please specify author(s), affiliation(s), title of talk, and 3-5 keywords in the main body of your email, and mention that you would like the submission to be considered for the gesture theme session. All abstracts will be reviewed by the SALC III scientific committee.

Notification of acceptance by February 1, 2011.
