Workshop on Numeral Systems of Nigerian Languages

Meeting Description: 

Nigerian Numeral Systems 2010 is a 2-day workshop of the Linguistic Association
on 'Numeral Systems of Nigerian Languages', featuring robust
discussions/tutorials by some of the foremost researchers working on Numeral
Systems of African languages. It will take place from 1st - 2nd December, 2010,
at the Department of Linguistics & Communication Studies, University of Port
Harcourt, Nigeria.

Areas to be covered include but not limited to the following:

a. Traditional and modern counting systems in a named Nigerian language
b. The traditional counting system of a named Nigerian language and implications
for mathematical computation
c. Traditional counting systems in the computer age
d. Derivational processes in the numeral system of a named Nigerian language
e. Different ways of counting in a named Nigerian language
f. On the origin of 400 as the highest number in the numeral systems of Nigerian
languages
g. The counting systems of Nigerian languages and the people's worldview
h. Manipulating high numbers in the counting system of a named Nigerian language
i. On the relationship between the numeral system and other aspects of the
grammar of a named Nigerian language
j. The endangerment of the numeral system of a Nigerian language
k. Apparent mixture in the numeral base systems in some Nigerian languages
l. Coping with complex mathematical computations in the numeral systems of some
Nigerian counting systems
m. Standardisation and the loss of traditional counting system in a named
Nigerian language
n. Language engineering, numeracy and the implications of teaching science and
technology in a named Nigerian Language

The workshop will hold during the 23rd Annual Conference of the Linguistic
Association of Nigeria also taking place at the Department of Linguistics & 
Communication Studies from 29 November - 3 December, 2010. Those interested to

Workshop registration fee is N12,000 for participants from Nigeria and $300 for
overseas participants, but free for those who register for the 23rd Annual
