Description:

The PhD position is part of the NWO-funded research project 'International
adoption and language development: a perspective from Kindertransport
survivors', awarded to Prof. Dr. Monika S. Schmid
(http://www.rug.nl/staff/m.s.schmid/index). This program aims to
investigate whether young migrants who left their country of birth shortly
before or after the onset of puberty have an advantage in second language
learning and a disadvantage in L1 retention if they experience a complete
break of L1 input and use in comparison with speakers with continued
exposure. In order to examine this, oral history testemonies from
German-Jewish migrants who escaped from Nazi Germany between 1938 and 1939,
either in the company of their families or on their own within the
framework of the Kindertransporte, will be investigated. The successful
candidate will compile and investigate a corpus of predominantly
English-language interviews which have been conducted by various Holocaust
memorial organisations. The PhD student should be a native or near-native
speaker of English, ideally with a good command of German.

Requirements
-  Master's degree (preferably a Research Master) in (General/Applied)
Linguistics, English Language or a related field 
-  excellent record of undergraduate and Master's level study
-  native or near-native command of English, good or excellent command of
German
-  ability to work in a research team
-  experience with or willingness to learn to work with corpora
-  ability or willingness to learn to apply experimental methods is an
advantage. 

Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers a salary of EUR 2,042 gross per month in
the first year to EUR 2,612 gross per month in the fourth year (figures
based on full employment). The full-time appointment is temporary for a
specified period of four years.

Interviews will take place between Nov. 16th and Nov. 18th.

The starting date is 1 January 2011.

Affiliation
The PhD candidate will be affiliated with the 'Language and literacy
development across the lifespan' group of the Center for Language and
Cognition Groningen (CLCG) at the Faculty of Arts of the University of
Groningen. This institute embraces all the Linguistics research in the
faculty. The PhD candidate will be enrolled in the research training
program of the Graduate School for the Humanities.

The position requires residence in Groningen, 38 hours/week research and
research training, and must result in a PhD dissertation. After the first
year there will be an assessment of the candidates' results and the
progress of the project to decide whether the employment will be continued.
