2 PhD positions in Computational Semantics

Project 1: 'Computing Subordinating and Coordinating Discourse Relations'

On an abstract level, discourse relations can be divided into subordinating
and coordinating types. This project will study how the different types are
linguistically determined, and provide techniques for automatically
detecting the two different types of discourse relations in open-domain
texts. In particular, it aims to explore the role of tense, thematic roles
and entailment relations of text segments. 

Project 2: 'Robust Interpretation of Comparative Expressions' 

The family of comparatives and equative expressions is known for its high
variety of syntactic constructions and interaction with ellipsis. The aim
of this project is to define a classification of comparative expressions
useful for automatically interpreting open-domain texts. It will investigate 
to what extent comparatives can be analysed lexically, and what further 
techniques are required to compute disambiguated semantic 
representations.

Both projects are part of the Meaning Annotation Project and is concerned
with the development of a large-scale deep semantic annotation of text and
its application of machine learning methods. The PhD candidates will be
supervised by Prof. J. Bos.

Requirements

-  Master's degree in computational linguistics (or related field)
-  excellent record of undergraduate and Master's level study
-  experience in one or more of the following areas: 
   formal/lexical/computational semantics, machine learning
-  programming experience
-  ability to work in a research team
-  good command of English.

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers a salary of EUR 2,042 gross per month in
the first year to EUR 2,612 gross per month in the fourth year (figures
based on full employment). The full-time appointment is temporary for a
specified period of four years. The position requires residence in
Groningen, 38 hours/week research and research training, and must result in
a PhD dissertation. After the first year there will be an assessment of the
candidates' results and the progress of the project to decide whether the
employment will be continued.

Affiliation

The PhD candidate will be affiliated with the computational linguistics
group of the Center for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG) at the
Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen. This institute embraces all
the Linguistics research in the faculty. The PhD candidate will be enrolled
in the research training program of the Graduate School for the Humanities.
