Description:

The Center for Language and Cognition Groningen announces two PhD student
positions in generative linguistics (syntax and phonology). 

These 4-year PhD positions are part of a larger research project called
"Incomplete Parenthesis", funded by the European Research Council. The
general program investigates the relation between ellipsis phenomena and
parenthesis from a theoretical and cross-linguistic perspective. The
principal investigator is Dr. Mark de Vries. Furthermore, there are two
Postdocs (1 vacancy), two PhD students (vacancies), supporting staff, and
there is an international board of advisors. Each researcher will carry out
his or her own sub-project, as well as contribute to the overall aims. 
The provisional titles of the relevant PhD projects are: (i) "Reporting and
comment clauses cross-linguistically, and the issue of discontinuous
anaphora" and (ii) "Prosodic features of incomplete parentheses". The

Requirements
-  An MA degree in theoretical linguistics or a related field;
-  Commitment to the general project; willingness to cooperate;
-  Affinity with generative syntax, and a broad linguistic interest,
including typology, information structure, and prosody;
-  Full proficiency in English; motivation to learn Dutch (if applicable).

Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers a salary of EUR 2,042 gross per month in
the first year to EUR 2,612 gross per month in the fourth year (figures
based on full employment). 

Starting date: 1 Feb. 2011
Duration of the contract: 4 years
Appointment: 1.0 fte (employee status)

The position requires residence in Groningen, 38 hours/week research and
research training, and must result in a PhD dissertation. After the first
year there will be an assessment of the candidates' results and the
progress of the project to decide whether the employment will be continued.

Affiliation
The candidates will be affiliated with the 'Syntax and Semantics' group of
the Center for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG) at the Faculty of
Arts of the University of Groningen. This institute embraces all the
Linguistics research in the faculty. The PhD candidate will be enrolled in
the research training program of the Graduate School for the Humanities.
PhD Students will also participate in the Netherlands Graduate School of
Linguistics (LOT).
