University or Organization: University of Michigan
Department: Center for the Development of Language & Literacy
Job Location: Michigan, USA
Web Address: http://www.umich.edu
Job Rank: Director

Specialty Areas: Educational Linguistics

Description:

The University of Michigan is seeking a strong candidate to lead the
University Center for the Development of Language and Literacy (UCLL) at
the Institute for Human Adjustment (IHA) in the Rackham Graduate School.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to provide leadership for the
Center's clinical, research, and teaching missions. These missions are to
provide excellent assessment and innovative language and literacy
interventions to a diverse set of individuals with communication
differences and disorders; to provide leadership in expanding the
scientific knowledge base of language and literacy and related disorders;
and to educate and promote awareness and understanding of language and
literacy and related disorders. We are seeking an individual with high
initiative who will take advantage of the many opportunities available at
the University of Michigan for collaboration across units and departments.
The individual will have opportunities to develop new or improved clinical
programs, training opportunities, and research activities that relate to
UCLL's mission.

The Center is located on the UM campus. The clinical programs serve
children, youth, and adults with language and learning disabilities. The
Center's University of Michigan Aphasia Program (UMAP) is widely recognized
as a leader in the treatment of chronic aphasia. Students from nearby
speech-language pathology programs train as student interns at UCLL, and UM
students work as research, office, and clinical assistants. The Center is
currently home to a number of externally funded grants focusing on the role
of oral language in the literacy development of African American English
speaking students. The Center has begun a new initiative in dyslexia,
offering a state-of-the-art website to the public at large, a specialized
clinical service program for students with dyslexia, and collaboration with
other UM faculty in research focusing on the neural markers of dyslexia.

This position will be made available to the strongest candidate as either a
50% appointment (Director) or a 100% appointment (Director and either
expanded clinical service responsibilities or an externally funded research
or instructional appointment). We hope to fill the position with a
candidate who can begin in 09/2011; some flexibility in starting date is
possible. The Director provides overall leadership for the clinical,
research, and training programs; evaluates the effectiveness of
departmental operations and implements organizational changes; directs the
implementation of all program objectives, policies, procedures and
activities; and oversees the fiscal and human resource planning and
allocation, marketing, fundraising and administrative operations.

Candidates should hold a PhD in speech-language pathology, educational
linguistics, educational psychology, neuropsychology, or another related
field. They should have demonstrated a record of administrative, program
development, and clinical supervisory experience; a record of high quality
research; and a min of 5 years employment experience in a relevant work
context. Additional desirable characteristics include an understanding and
appreciation of overall University objectives and the ability to
successfully navigate the complexities of a university setting.

The UofM is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. Submit a
letter of interest describing your qualifications for this position, 3
professional references, and CV no later than 01/15/11 through the
University of Michigan Careers Website URL below with the job opening id 52874.
