Linguistic Field(s): Language Acquisition

Call Deadline: 30-Jan-2011

Meeting Description:

The Texas Foreign Language Education Conference (TexFLEC) aims to be
an annual conference that brings together researchers and educators in the
fields of foreign language education, TEFL/TESL (Teaching English as a
Foreign Language or Second Language), linguistics, and applied linguistics.

About This Year's Theme
'Language Education across the Academic Pipeline'

The 'academic pipeline' is a metaphor that education researchers have
used to describe the flow of students from primary schools through higher
education (e.g. Gándara, et al., 1998). The academic pipeline relates to
'vertical articulation,' discussed in Foreign Language Education research to
refer to the direction of curricula across levels of school (Lange, 1982).

This year's conference will address crucial questions about the academic
pipeline for ELLs and foreign language learners: To what extent does K-12
language education prepare students to transition smoothly to college and
higher education opportunities? What evaluative and pedagogical practices
within and among schools provide continuity and support for students as
they navigate through their academic careers? What factors cause students
to 'leak out' of the educational system and/or out of language studies?

Deadline for submissions is January 31st, 2011.

Austin.

The theme for this year's conference emphasizes connections and gaps
that exist between levels of language education. Teachers, students, and
researchers are encouraged to submit proposals for presentations of
papers and/or research-based teaching practices in the following areas:

- Articulation across levels of K-16 language education

12, post-secondary, and/or continuing education contexts
- Analysis of policy concerning language minority students, language
planning, and language politics

- Language maintenance and additive multilingualism
- Learner and teacher identity in language education

Preference will be given to scholarly, creative, and innovative presentations.

Deadline: All proposals must be received by January 31, 2011.

Session Types:

with conference participants.

-Practice-oriented Presentations will include a 30 minute discussion, or
group-led modeling exercise of a teaching practice that applies current
research to the classroom.
