Description:

The Department of World Languages at the University of South Florida is
seeking a Chair to begin a twelve-month contract at the rank of Full
Professor on August 7, 2011. Salary negotiable.
 
Responsibilities: The new Chair of World Languages will be leading a
department that houses the Modern Languages, Classics, and Linguistics. The
Department offers the modern languages of Arabic, Chinese, French, German,
Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, with
the B.A. in French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish and the M.A. in
French and Spanish. Classics offers Latin and Ancient Greek, with a B.A. in
Classics and a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Classical Civilizations, and is
also involved in M.A. and M.A.T. degrees. Linguistics offers an M.A. in
Applied Linguistics and is a partner with the College of Education in a
Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition and Instructional Technology.
 
A primary responsibility of the Chair will be to represent the Department
in the College of Arts and Sciences and in the University, which is
committed to developing the Department as part of its strategic goal of
giving its students a truly global education.   
 
In addition to fostering the synergy and extensive interdisciplinary
activity that exists within the Department, the Chair will work with other
units and departments, especially in the humanities, to develop new
multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary initiatives, particularly at the
graduate level. The new chair will seek to increase collaboration with
unique USF interdisciplinary initiatives such as USF World, the Patel
Center for Global Solutions, our Global Academic Partners program, and the
recently formed School of Global Sustainability.

Qualifications:  
Essential: The new Chair of World Languages must have a Ph.D. with a
specialization in one of the disciplines represented by World Languages,
with the rank of Full Professor, and an outstanding record in scholarship
and teaching. We are seeking a dynamic and innovative leader.    

Preferred: The new Chair of World Languages should be knowledgeable about
the major issues and questions the profession is engaged with as well as
best practices in developing language proficiency in both the European and
non-European languages. The new Chair should also have a record of
successful interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary work. Strong preference
will be given to someone who has demonstrated superior leadership in
chairing a department.
