Assistant Professor in Second Language Education (Chinese)
Department of Teacher Education
The Department of Teacher Education at MSU, is seeking one or more
assistant professors in second language education, with an emphasis on Chinese.

To meet the rising demand for Chinese language teachers and expand the
global dimension of its internationally recognized teacher education
program, the College of Education at Michigan State University (MSU) is
seeking scholars with a demonstrated interest in second language education,
teacher education, and Chinese Language and Culture. MSU College of
Education faculty have a long history of scholarly activities in China and
with Chinese educators. The Confucius Institute at MSU, jointly established
with Chinese Language Council International, China Central TV and Radio
University, has become a major international pioneer for Chinese language
and culture education. Jointly, the Teacher Education Department and the
Confucius Institute have mounted a Chinese Teacher Certification Program to
meet the need for teachers of Chinese in Michigan and surrounding states.

These tenure system positions will be located in the Department of Teacher
Education. Candidates will be expected to participate in activities with
the Confucius Institute, potentially including teaching, research, and
program development, and can seek affiliation with other academic units
within the College. These are academic year positions with an expected
starting date of  August 15, 2011.

Major responsibilities: Successful candidates are expected to conduct
research, teaching, and outreach in second language/world language
education, desirably with an emphasis on Chinese language. They are also
expected to seek external funding from a variety of sources to support
research activities, and to contribute to on-going activities and
initiatives in the Department, College, and University.

Qualifications: Applicants should have an earned doctoral degree and a
record of scholarly activities in a relevant field of Applied Linguistics
or Education, such as second language education; child and/or adolescent
second language acquisition; heritage, bilingual and/or dual language
education; linguistically and culturally diverse students; or teacher
education. A research agenda that includes Chinese language teaching or
Chinese language learning and proficiency in Chinese are highly desired.
Applicants with an interest in the preparation of world language teachers
more generally are also desired.

relevant experiences and accomplishments, current curriculum vita, names
and contact information of three references, and two sample scholarly
products (published papers, multimedia products, grant proposals, etc). All
