Abstract:

As a knowledge of Gothic is indispensable to students of the oldest periods of
the other Germanic languages, this book will useful to any rate students whose
interests are mainly philology and linguistics. Considerable care and trouble
have been taken in the selection of the material contained in the chapters
relating to the phonology and accidence, and I venture to say that the student,
who thoroughly masters the book, will not only have gained a comprehensive
knowledge of Gothic, but will also have aquired a considerable knowledge of
Comparative Germanic Grammar.

Contents: Alphabet and pronunciation, the primary Germanic vowel-system, the
primary Germanic vowel-system, the Gothic development of the general
Germanic vowels of accented syllables, the first sound shiftig, Verner´s law, the
Gothic development of the general Germanic consonant-system, declension of
nouns, classification of verbs, word-formation, etc. (Re-edition; originally
published 1917 in Oxford; written in English).
