We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

Dear colleagues,

Can you please recommend a good book/textbook providing an
overview of several contemporary approaches to linguistic analysis
(such as, for example, cognitive grammar, construction grammar,
minimalist syntax, functional grammar/s, etc.) in one volume?

I need a textbook for teaching Modern Language Theory - a
concluding class of our undergraduate program. Students taking this
class usually have already taken 4-5 different courses in linguistics.
Our goal is to provide an overview of the present situation in the
discipline of linguistics - what schools of thought are active and how
their analyses are different. I have never found any single volume
describing several contemporary theories of language analysis and
used an assortment of articles instead.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, and I will post a summary of
your responses.

Thank you,
Marina Gorlach
