We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at
http://linguistlist.org/LL/posttolinguist.cfm.

I would like to invite colleagues outside the UK to take part in a cross-
country audit of the amount of explicit grammatical terminology that
school-leavers know. This information is obviously crucial in planning
undergraduate linguistics teaching, but it's also important for those of
us who try to influence our country's school system.

The instrument is very simple, and has been used in a dozen UK
universities. It's a one-page sheet which presents an English sentence
and then asks the subject to identify examples of 16 word classes. It's
easy to mark (with the help of the answer sheet which is provided) and
the results can conveniently be summarised simply by counting errors
or gaps for each question, and then calculating the mean gaps per
student. I provide a mark sheet, and hope that you will share your
results with me so that I can add them to an international database.

The test instrument and some information about the history of the
project so far can be found at:

If you have any queries, please mail me at dick at ling.ucl.ac.uk
