Description:

The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) is
seeking a Faculty Research Assistant to join the CASL Technology Use team.
The Technology Use team applies the methods and tools of Computational
Linguistics (CL) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to solve problems in
Computational Lexicography, Morphology and Phonology. The successful
candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team on research projects that
enable government employees, especially foreign language professionals, to
improve their performance.  

Duties: Duties will include writing software, developing algorithms,
applying existing NLP tools to specific problems, coordinating workflow of
multi-disciplinary teams, and researching relevant work in CL/NLP
literature in support of CASL's Technology Use projects.

Qualifications:
Required: Bachelor's degree (Master's degree preferred) in Computer Science
or related field, with some concentration in Linguistics, CL, or NLP.
Software engineering experience in Linux, Java and Perl required.  
Advantageous: Experience or familiarity with Python, XML, Unicode,
non-English text processing, LaTeX, Docbook, GUI programming, lexicography,
and/or language-learning technology.

Candidates must be willing to acquire relevant skills and demonstrate an
ability to work in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary and demanding environment.

Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and be willing to obtain the
appropriate security clearance. 

CASL, established in 2003, is the nation's 10th university-affiliated
research center. Its mission is to conduct state-of-the-science research
that results in improved performance on language tasks relevant to the work
of government language professionals. Our research focuses on improving
knowledge of less commonly taught languages; enhancing the acquisition and
maintenance of foreign language capability by government professionals;
advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in a government
professions; and improving the quality of human language technology.
