We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

Dear LINGUIST List members,

In order to undertake a contrastive analysis of "hay" and "there"
sentences in Spanish and English, I would be grateful if you could send
me references containing functional and formal analyses of
presentational "hay" constructions in Spanish ("Hay tres estudiantes
esperando por el profesor en el pasillo"). I am interested in issues such
as: the syntactic structure of the construction, its informative
organisation (in terms of old vs given information), processing
(distribution of constituents along the sentence), etc.

So far I have focused on:
Suñer, Margarita (1982) "Syntax and Semantics of Spanish
Presentational Sentence Types". Washington, DC: Georgetown
University.

I am not aware of more recent stuff.

Thanks in advance,

Javier Perez-Guerra
