Description:
The Department of Language and Foreign Studies of American University
invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of
Language and Foreign Studies, to begin in the fall semester, 2011.
Specialization: open, but the successful candidate will have expertise in
French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish and Latin American studies,
and/or Comparative Literature. Professor or Associate Professor rank required.
Responsibilities: Chairing the Department of Language and Foreign Studies,
which entails strategic planning, development of emergent areas of
expertise, faculty and staff management, coordination of interdisciplinary
activities, assistance with curriculum building and securing external
funding. Teaching two courses per year in the applicant's general field.
Maintaining an active and productive research agenda.
Candidates should possess an outstanding record of scholarship; exceptional
communication and interpersonal skills; experience as department chair or
program director; the ability to lead the department in developing and
implementing a compelling vision for its research, education and service
programs. Salary commensurate with experience.

recommendation and a letter of interest indicating whether or not attending
the 2010 MLA convention, to the address below. Review of applications will
