(NACLO)

Contest dates:
Wednesday, February 2 (2011) and Thursday, March 10 (2011)

Please respond:
As soon as possible, but no later than December 15, 2010.

The Fourth Annual North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad
(NACLO) will take place on February 2 and March 10 of 2011.

Over the last two years close to 100 high schools and more than 30
universities in the United States and Canada hosted more than 1000
students annually in this competition. In 2010, the top 100 contestants
in the Open Round advanced to the Invitational Round of NACLO, and
two teams then went to Sweden to compete at the International
Linguistics Olympiad, and came home with a number of medals. In
2011, the ILO will be held in the United States.

The success of NACLO depends on the collaborative efforts of many
volunteers in the linguistics and computational linguistics communities.
At this point you can participate by:

1. Hosting a 'site' for the Open Round of NACLO on February 2, 2011.
2. Serving on a NACLO committee.
3. Suggesting problems to be used in future Olympiads.

Hosting a site involves inviting high school students from your area to
your university on February 2, 2011. You will proctor the contest for
three or four hours, and send the contestants' solutions to the judges.

We invite linguists from around the world to serve on a NACLO
committee.

We invite all linguists and computer scientists working within the
framework of Computational Linguistics to serve on a NACLO
committee.

Committees in need of members at this point are:

-Home Team: Coordinates and liaises with universities around the
country.
-Program Committee: Creates and grades puzzles.
-Sponsorship Committee: Works with new sponsors for the event.

Challenging and engaging problems are the centerpiece of NACLO. If
you have any ideas for new problems, please contact us. Guidelines
for problem creation are at
http://www.uoregon.edu/~tpayne/ProblemCreation.pdf.

Thank you very much for your help in raising the profile of linguistics
among school students. Please contact the organizing team members if
you have questions or would like to participate.
