Linguistic Field(s): Morphology

Meeting Description:

The Centre for General and Applied Linguistics (CELGA), University of Coimbra,
Portugal, is proud to host a two-day workshop on 'Perspectives on the Morphome',
which will be held on October 29-30 at the University of Coimbra.

Since Aronoff (1994), the term 'morphome' has been widely used to denote a unit
of linguistic representation known only to the morphology. Candidates for
morphomic status include inflectional class features, as well as derivational
and inflectional bases ('stems') which do not submit to a consistent semantic or
syntactic characterization.

This workshop brings together scholars who share an interest in the concept of
the morphome, but who hold divergent views on whether morphomes exist, what they
may be, and how to account for morphological patterns claimed to require the
postulation of morphomes. Our speakers will be offering different theoretical
and empirical views on all of these questions.

Invited Speakers:

Mark Aronoff (Stony Brook), Ricardo Bermúdez-Otero (Manchester), Greville
Corbett (Surrey), Andrew Koontz-Garboden (Manchester), Martin Maiden (Oxford),
Andrew Nevins (UCL), Donca Steriade, Andrew Spencer (Essex), Gregory Stump
(Kentucky), Jochen Trommer (Leipzig).

Programme and abstracts can be found on our website:

For planning purposes, please register before October 15. You can register by
filling in the form provided on the workshop's website:
