Description:

The Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL) is the Institute for
linguistics at the Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University. LUCL
coordinates the research of about 60 permanent faculty members, 50 PhD
students and 30 post-docs. 

LUCL is looking for:

4 PhD STUDENTS (4 years, 38 hrs a week or 5 years, 30,4 hrs a week)
vacancy number: 11-085 

starting on 1 September 2011.

There are two positions available for candidates with their own research
proposal (project I and II); one on the project "Voices on Birchbark:
Reconstructing the pragmatics of Old Russian birchbark letters" (project
III) and one on the project "Dialects entangled: language contact between
Albanian and Southern Italian dialects" (project IV).

Research at LUCL:
Leiden University has a long tradition in research in the world's languages
and boasts unique linguistic expertise in all corners of the earth. LUCL
combines current theoretical insights and modern experimental methods in
its research profile area "Language Diversity in the World". For more

Tasks (for all positions):
-  conducting original research on a relevant topic;
-  writing of a PhD thesis;
-  submitting research results for publication in peer-reviewed academic
journals;
-  presenting papers at (international) conferences;
-  teaching of at least two undergraduate courses, normally one in the
second and one in the third year of the appointment;
-  organizing and participating in reading and discussions groups,
seminars, workshops within LUCL.

Requirements (for all positions):
-  a Master or equivalent degree in a relevant field;
-  a curious, enterprising, and creative mind and excellent analytical skills;
-  good writing skills and an excellent command of English;
-  ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Conditions of employment (for all positions):
The position of PhD Student is temporary for a maximum of four years
(full-time appointment), and with an initial 18-month probationary period.
The salary is determined in accordance with the current scales as set out
in the Collective Labour Agreement for the Dutch universities (CAO):
EUR 2.042,= to EUR 2.612,= gross per month, with additional holiday pay and
end-of-year bonus. Candidates form outside the Netherlands may be eligible
for a substantial tax break.
