Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics; Sociolinguistics

Language Family(ies): Creole
Other Specialty: Language Contact

Meeting Description:

The International Seminar on Creole Languages provides ample opportunity
for scholars doing research on Creole languages to exchange ideas and
debate current issues in the field. We especially invite post-graduate
students at advanced M.A., doc- and post-doc level.

Each 3-hour session is dedicated to one specific aspect of Creole and
contact linguistics. It will be addressed by an experienced researcher, who
presents the main issues and critical questions from own research and
leads the discussion with the participants.

This year the topics focus on Contact Languages, L2 Acquisition, Corpora
Linguistics and Language Policy, which will relate to descriptive approaches
to creoles.

The conference language will be English (or Portuguese if the audience is
fluent in the language).

Furthermore, we are planning a poster session where anybody who's
interested is welcomed to present his own project or studies. There will be a
session for oral presentation and discussion of posters (10 min. each).

Invited speakers:
- Ana Maria Madeira (FCSH/UNL, Lisboa) - L2 Acquisition
- Clancy Clements (Indiana Univ., Bloomington, USA) - Contact languages
- Luís Batalha (ISCSP/UTL, Lisboa) - Language identity and language policy
- Tjerk Hagemeijer (CLUL/FLUL, Lisboa) - Corpora linguistics (for Santome
Creole)

Place: Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e
Humanas (http://www.fcsh.unl.pt/)

Organizers:
Fernanda Pratas (CLUNL/FCSH)
Nélia Alexandre (CLUL/FLUL)

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and
as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a
registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-
6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more information
visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails
your contacting your human resources department and sending us a form
that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is
generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the value of your
gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
