Description:

The prestigious ESRC Centre for Research on Bilingualism 
(www.bilingualism.bangor.ac.uk) was established at Bangor on 1st January 2007 
with funding from the ESRC, HEFCW, and the Welsh Assembly Government, and 
is the first research centre in the UK to focus specifically on bilingualism. We are 
now part of the all-Wales Doctoral Training Centre and for 2011, we are inviting 
applications for one studentship award which will fund one of the following options:

1)	One year Masters followed by a three year PhD (1+3): For those students

Value:
For UK applicants, full-time students will receive a fee contribution of £3,466 and a 
stipend of £13,590. 
For EU applicants, full-time students will receive a fee contribution of £3,466 only.

You first need to choose your area of research in bilingualism, which should be

Having decided on your area of research you should contact your potential 
supervisor and discuss your research plans with them. Once your supervisor has 
agreed in principle to supervise you, you can make your application.

In addition to the application form and its requirements, applicants applying for an 
ESRC Funded studentship are required to provide:

* A statement (100-500 words) about your relevant research skills (listing all your 
relevant skills, such as computer skills, relevant prior experience, the title and a 
brief description of your graduate study).
* A statement (500-1000 words) about your main focus of research interest, 
potentially describing some research you have done in the past. 
The proposal should seek to set out:
-	the proposed research topic 
-	the aims of the research and the research questions being asked 
-	background to the research 
-	how the project will be approached, with particular reference to the 
methodologies/techniques which might be employed and the sources that might be 
consulted 
-	relevant disciplinary insights 
-	the anticipated outcomes from the project 
-	how any ethical issues arising from the design or conduct of the research will 
be addressed 
-	how you think this research interest would fit with the supervisor and with the 
research environment of either the School of Psychology or the Centre for 
Research on Bilingualism in Theory & Practice, depending on which studentship 
you are applying for. 

* If an applicant for a +3 award has completed a Master's programme which is not 
one that is currently recognised by the ESRC, full details of the research training 
the applicant has completed and how this maps onto the relevant course / 
research requirements must be provided (up to 600 words).

4 May 2011, with copies of all documents sent to m.deuchar at bangor.ac.uk 
* Please answer Q3 on the on-line form by stating 'I am applying for a 2011 ESRC 
funded studentship'.
