Meeting Description:

Geneva has been selected by the Comité International Permanent des Linguistes as the venue for the next International Congress of Linguists. The general focus of the 19th ICL is a look at the future of linguistics: Linguistics on the brink of its second century: The Language-Cognition Interface. Our proposal for the Congress concentrates on the cognition-language relationship. The provisional choice of ten parallel sessions will provide ample opportunity to explore this topic, in sessions such as Origins of Language and Human Cognition, Experimental Approaches to Pragmatics and Discourse, Acquisition and Pathologies of Language, and Language and the Brain. Traditional areas of linguistics will also be represented (Diachronic Linguistics, Phonology and Morphology, Theoretical and Comparative syntax, Lexical Semantics and Pragmatics, and Computational Linguistics), but the general orientation will be the relation between language and cognition. A retrospective look at the history of linguistics and the contribution of Saussure will be offered in a parallel session (The Saussure-Chomsky Connection: The Thread of Modern Synchronic Linguistics).

Submission Guidelines:

The candidate chooses the abstract destination:

- Verbal communication in a parallel session
- Poster
- Verbal communication in a parallel session or poster

N.B.: In these first three hypotheses, the candidate should also choose the domain (the list of domain is identical to the title list of the parallel sessions, so consult the parallel sessions pages for content precisions) in which he thinks his contribution should be evaluated. The abstracts submitted either for the parallel sessions or the poster session are selected by the parallel sessions organizers, helped by a group of experts. The sessions organizers may also forward the abstract to another parallel session organizer, if they find it appropriate.

When submitting an abstract proposal in answer to a call for papers, people may keep their submission open during the whole timespan of the call for papers. They can:

- Save the submission form at any time, whatever the number of fields changed;
- Choose and change the submission form status by checking the corresponding button - 
submission 'provisory' or 'definitive'
- As long as the status of the submission is 'provisory submission', they can reach their personal space from the website (MyICL) and change the data in the form as they wish.

A fortnight before the deadline for a call for papers, an e-mail will be sent to all the people who have a pending formulary and whose contribution needs to be finalized before the deadline, to remind them of the deadline and the pending status of their submission.

Rules for Abstract Submission:

- Word limit: 500 words (including examples but excluding title and references).
- Indicate word count at the bottom of the abstract.
- File format: as far as possible, type your text in the box; if your abstract includes schemas, pictures, you can upload a .pdf file.
- Abstracts will be reviewed anonymously. Remove all author information from the abstract.
- Author information (name, affiliation, email address, etc.) will be required on the submission website (submission form). You must answer all questions in the submission form.
- An author may submit up to two abstracts (at least one joint paper) for either the parallel sessions or the poster sessions; submissions for the workshops, either as organizer or as contributor, are however unlimited.
- For joint abstracts, the first author will be the contact person.

Acceptance notification will be sent fall 2012, except for contributors who have indicated in the abstracts submission form that they needed an answer by spring 2012.
