Dr. Terry Lynn "Doc" Irons, 54, of Morehead, KY, formerly of Waynesville,
OH, Morehead State University Professor of English, passed away Wednesday,
August 3, 2011, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was preceded in
death by his father Richard Irons and niece Rebecca Anne Irons. He is
survived by his mother Barbara Irons of Waynesville, OH, and brother
Charles Irons and sister-in-law Melissa Irons of Dayton, OH.

Terry was valedictorian and National Merit Scholar at Waynesville High
School, earned B.A. and M.A. degrees in English and English Literature from
the University of Dayton, and a Ph.D. in English Language and Linguistics
at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He was a sociolinguist who was
particularly interested in sound change. Much of his recent research
focused on the vowel sounds of Kentucky.

Terry was a long-time professor at Morehead State University and was deeply
engaged with both the school and the local community. During his tenure at
MSU, he served as both chair of the Faculty Senate and as Faculty Regent
and was the recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Service Award. For
sixteen years, Terry acted as the advisor for the Zeta Zeta Chapter of
Delta Tau Delta fraternity, mentoring hundreds of undergraduate students.
This summer, he received the Distinguished Service Chapter Award, which is
the highest individual honor that can be bestowed upon an alumnus of the
fraternity.

Terry was a board member of both the Morehead Theatre Guild and Habitat for
Humanity and heavily involved with the Kentucky Teacher Intern Program, the
Coalition of Senate and Faculty Leadership, Southeastern Conference on
Linguistics, Rowan County Relay for Life, and MSU Student Relay for Life.
He was also a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the MSU Concert Choir, and an
