We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

Hello, my name is Alla Sobirova. I am doing the research on the topic
"Recent changes in Writing Systems in CIS".

First, I want to discuss what changes took place in writing systems for
the 20th century concentrating on CIS. So I am looking for materials
(articles, books) that can help me make an analysis.

I would really appreciate if somebody can give me recommend
information or where to find it on the topic. I was able to find some
information but only in Russian and it was very old (Istrin V.-The History
of Writing-Moscow,1965). I know there are some more recent
publications but I could not find them yet. I would be thankful if
somebody could help with that too.

Here is the example of what I want to do. I borrowed it from my master
thesis:

Neshi (naskh) has a rounded cursive and was used for writing letters,
business documents, and wherever there was more need in speed
than in sophistication and elegance of form.
By the XII century Kufic style was out of use everywhere except in
North Africa, where it developed into a style of writing the Maghreb,
which is used today. Neshi (naskh) continues to be applied-it
developed most of the later styles of Arabic calligraphy. The most
important of its varieties are elegant nasta'lik (Persia), ri'ka (Ottoman
Empire), sofas (Turkey), sools-for ornamental purposes, siakan (the
Janissaries), rayhan, muhakkak.
