Meeting Description:

The Workshop on Innovations in Cantonese Linguistics (WICL) will take place on March 16 and 17, 2012, at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A. The workshop focuses on new advances in Cantonese linguistics, including innovations in methodologies, tools, and/or computing software. New approaches and research on language variation within the Cantonese (or 'Yue') subgroup of the Chinese language family, language contact phenomena, and new subfields and their interfaces are especially welcome. 

Keynote Speakers:

Professor Anne Oi-kan Yue (???), University of Washington
Professor Alan C. L. Yu (???), University of Chicago

The workshop will also include a session on Cantonese Tones and Breaks Indices (Cantonese ToBI), to introduce the framework and to explore its extension from Hong Kong Cantonese to a Pan-Cantonese version.

This workshop is sponsored by The Ohio State University's Buckeye Language Network and co-sponsored by the Institute for Chinese Studies, the Graduate Association of Chinese Linguistics, and other units at The Ohio State University.

Call for Papers:

Abstracts:

Abstracts are invited for 20-minute presentations related to innovative research in any subfield of Cantonese linguistics and related disciplines. Submissions are limited to one (1) single-authored paper and one (1) joint-authored paper per person. 

Abstracts must be written in English and on a single page, including examples, key references, etc. 

Prepare two (2) copies of the abstract in PDF format, one containing the name(s) of author(s), affiliation(s), and e-mail address(es); and the other (for anonymous review) identified by title only.  

In the submission email, please provide the following information:

- Paper title
- Name(s) of author(s)
- Affiliation
- Status (student or non-student)
- Contact information (postal and email addresses) 
- Primary area(s) of linguistics addressed in the abstract (e.g., Phonetics, Phonology, Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics, Sociolinguistics, etc.)

Abstract Submission:

Submit the two copies of the abstract and the information file to wicl at ling.osu.edu with the subject heading, 'WICL Abstract'.

Abstract Deadline:

By November 11, 2011, 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time. 

Notification of Acceptance via Email:

By December 12, 2011.
