*Special Issue on Image Feature Detection and Description*

Image feature detection and description are the basis of image and video
analysis. Robust and efficient image features can significantly improve the
performance of image/video retrieval, recognition, tracking, biometrics,
matching, registration, reconstruction, etc. Image features can be local,
dense, dense local, semi-local and global. In many cases, image features
are expected to be stable, repeatable, illumination invariant,
discriminative, representative, and even have semantic senses. In addition,
the computation efficiency is also an important factor for image feature
extraction and description. In recent years, many powerful image features
are developed such as SIFT, SURF, HOG, LBP, GLOH, Daisy, GIST (Spatial
Envelope), RCM (Region Covariance Matrix). Although much fruits have been
achieved in image feature detection and description, there is large space
to improve the performance.

The aim of this special issue is to bring together the state-of-the
research results on image feature detection and description and its
applications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Criterion for image feature detection and description

- Fast algorithm for image feature detection and description

- Learning-based feature extraction

- Local vs. global image features

- Dense vs. sparse image features

- Multi-scale image features

- Image feature selection, weighing, and combination

- Performance evaluation of different image features

- Application of image features for image and video analysis
