Assistant Professor
Department of English [Ref. C/117/14]

The Department of English is a leading centre for English studies in the
Asian region, and has an international reputation for its research on
English language and literature. Faculty in the Department typically teach
five courses a year, covering a wide range of subjects such as Asian
Englishes, Asian literature in English, creative writing, discourse
analysis, English for academic purposes, English in China, genre analysis,
intercultural communication, pragmatics, second language acquisition,
sociolinguistics, world Englishes, and world literature in English.

Duties: Applications are invited from well-qualified candidates in any of
the above specialisations. New faculty will be expected to teach on the
first-year foundation course in 'Gateway English' (GE), in addition to
their areas of specialisation. Currently, the GE English program includes
courses on discipline-specific English (English for Business Communication,
English for Science, and English for Engineering), British and American
Literary and Cultural Studies, Creative Writing, Asian Literature in
English, Travel Writing, Life Writing, Film, Theater/Drama and Popular
Culture. In addition, faculty are expected to contribute significantly to
the Department's research profile.  

The post is a substantiation-track position. Applications from candidates
interested in a Visiting Assistant Professor position, tenable for 2 years,
are also welcome.

Requirements: A PhD in English Studies or a closely-related subject.
Experience and background in teaching English to Asian students is
desirable but not essential. An enthusiasm for research and publishing is,
however, both expected and required.

Salary and Conditions of Service:
Remuneration package will be driven by market competitiveness and
individual performance. Excellent fringe benefits include gratuity, leave,
medical and dental schemes, and relocation assistance (where applicable).
Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract.
