[…] Il s'ensuivit dans L'Émulation, revue qui se publiait à Fribourg, une 
polémique plus intéressante pour le littérateur que pour le philologue, mais qui 
me donna l'idée, un peu téméraire alors, d'une étude comparée de nos 
dialectes de la Suisse romande, embrassant à la fois grammaire, le 
vocabulaire et l'histoire de ces dialectes. C'est le travail, fruit de longues et 
laborieuses recherches, que je me décide enfin à mettre au jour. J'ai été 
devancé, il y a quelques années seulement, par deux écrivains suisses[…], 
quelques remarquables que soient les publications de ces deux jeunes 
savants, elles ne rendent pas mon ouvrage inutile ou superflu; au contraire, 
et pour s'en convaincre, il suffira de lire le présent mémoire qui lui servira 
d'introduction en même temps qu'ill doit preparer la voie à dàutres travaux 
linguistiques, en donnant au romand ce que lui a manqué jusqu'ici, c'est-à-
dire une orthographe rationelle qui puisse s'appliquer à tous ses dialectes, 
chose presque nécessaire si l'on veut que la methode scientifique remplace 
enfin l'empirisme dan l'étude comparative de nos idiomes populaires (de la 
préface).
