Queen Mary, University of London invites applications from candidates wishing to
undertake a PhD within the Linguistics pathway of the London Social Science DTC.
The DTC has 10 studentships to award for 2012 entry across all constituent
disciplines. Successful applicants will benefit from joint training provision by
Queen Mary and Goldsmiths, University of London.

Applications are accepted for either of the following PhD programmes:

1) PhD in Linguistics. This is a three-year (+3) programme for those who hold an
MA or equivalent postgraduate qualification in linguistics or a related field.

2) MA/PhD in Linguistics. This is a four-year (1+3) programme for those without
an MA or equivalent postgraduate qualification in linguistics or a related field.

We welcome proposals in all ESRC-fundable areas of Linguistics, but especially
in sociolinguistics (both variationist and interactional); multilingualism;
sociophonetics; discourse analysis; and ethnography of communication.

Before applying, you should establish contact with an appropriate supervisor in
the department, sending her/him full details of your academic background and
proposed topic
(http://www.sllf.qmul.ac.uk/linguistics/people/teaching/index.html). Once you
have secured an informal agreement to supervise, you should develop your PhD
proposal with the supervisor's guidance. For additional information about the
department, including details of postgraduate provision and departmental events,
see the department's website
(http://www.sllf.qmul.ac.uk/linguistics/postgraduate/index.html).

Interested applicants should submit an application for doctoral study to the
Department of Linguistics, Queen Mary, University of London by 30 January 2012.
Applications received after this deadline will still be considered for
acceptance to the departmental PhD programme but will be ineligible for ESRC
funding. Applications can be completed online or submitted via hard-copy. Full
information on applying for a PhD in the Department of Linguistics is available
on the School's website: http://www.sllf.qmul.ac.uk/postgraduate/#apply.

In order to be considered for an ESRC award, applicants must also complete a
separate Funding Application Form and submit it along with their PhD application
by the 30 January 2012 deadline. Full details on applying for ESRC awards is
available on the London Social Science website:
http://londonsocialscience.org.uk/index.html.

ESRC studentships may be awarded to cover tuition fees and a maintenance grant
for UK residents (both UK citizens and EU nationals). EU nationals not resident
in the UK are eligible for a fees only award. Non-EU nationals are not eligible
for ESRC awards, with the exception of persons who have been granted Indefinite
Leave to Remain and who can demonstrate a relevant connection to the UK. For
