Description:

Oxford Brookes University is inviting applications for a full-time three-year Ph.D.
studentship in educational linguistics and psychology to commence in September
2011. The successful applicant will work on a project entitled 'Educational and
psycholinguistic perspectives on children and young people who speak non-standard
varieties'. The studentship covers all University fees at the home/EU rate and also
provides an annual bursary of £13,000 which will increase by a 3% in each of the
second and third years.

The overarching goal of the study is to assess whether the language performance
and language attitudes of non-standard-speaking children changes after non-standard
mother tongues are introduced into the classroom. Subsequent lines of enquiry will
investigate (1) the attitudes of non-standard-speaking children towards their non-
standard varieties and towards the standard variety used at school, (2) the attitudes
of non-standard-speaking parents towards their non-standard varieties and towards
the use of these varieties in formal education, (3) the attitudes of educators towards
non-standard-speaking children, and (4) how educational policies can be modified to
provide improved support to children and young people who speak non-standard
varieties.

The successful candidate will be expected to work within one of the following areas
with special reference to educational contexts: Aboriginal languages, minority
languages, local languages, regional varieties, ethnic varieties, social varieties,
nonstandard varieties, creoles and/or pidgins.
